Packing a Rogallo rescue

An image older than 20 years... packing the first Rogallo type rescues.

A bit of history

Since the beginning of Entrenúvols, at the beginning of the century, we have specialized in security courses and everything that surrounds it. The parachute is an important safety element and we have always offered the service of airing, folding and installing emergency parachutes. We were pioneers in offering this service for “Rogallo” type parachutes.

As a party involved (infrastructure and pilot) in the test of paragliders and parachutes under the EN standard, we have a lot of experience in paraglider testing and can offer an exclusive paraglider flight test service.

Although we have never offered the service of paraglider reviews until the end of 2023, we have always taken care of our material (reviews and drafts) and have been aware of the techniques and developments in the field of paraglider review.

Check criteria

What defines whether a paraglider is safe to fly or not is the criterion used. For the same materials, it may vary depending on the manufacturers or other bodies. Usually (not always) manufacturers have a criteria. Some workshops have their own. The French Federation of Free Flight (FFVL) has created its own criteria. The PMA (World Paragliding Manufacturers Association) is just now working on a common criterion for all manufacturers to adhere to. Finally, APPI has developed a very complete training for maintenance technicians and a proprietary criterion based on calculations and empirical tests adapted to the type of sails. This criterion is continuously evolving and in constant dialogue with different manufacturers. At the beginning of 2024 there are ten manufacturers who have recognized the APPI system as valid for certifying their gliders.

APPI certified workshop

Entrenúvols is an APPI certified workshop. This means that it is automatically the official workshop of many brands and every day more brands are added to APPI’s recognition.

Being an APPI workshop implies constant contact with the network of APPI workshops, as well as constant updating of criteria and knowledge.

The work system is developed to be very efficient, as for example the system for draft review, measured by suspension groups and with differential correction, not individual.

SERVICES

PARAGLIDING AND RESCUES CHECK

Aired, folded and installed in harness or ventral container.

Even if you never plan to use it – we all do – it is an item that must be in perfect working order. Moisture and static electricity make the parachute open more slowly. Rubbers can also rot over time.

At least, it is recommended to air and fold once a year.

The parachute check consists of airing the parachute for a minimum of 24 hours, visual check of the fabric and suspension, change of elastic bands, folding according to the manufacturer’s manual and installation in the chair.

The installation in the harness is the most delicate part and carries the most safety problems.

It consists to put the glider on its original trim of the paraglider. It is the parameter that most affects the behavior in flight and the active safety of the paraglider.

We use the methodology specified by all manufacturers: we measure the length of all the lines of the paraglider and correct the mismatches with loops using the differential system. The differential method by groups allows not to accumulate errors, as happens if we try to correct the margin of error individually in each line.

Once the corrections have been made, we measure all the lines again to confirm that the paraglider is properly set.

We use a laser system mounted on precision rails with periodic scatter tests to ensure the quality of the measurements.

It is important to note that line stretching is not an endorsed method for any manufacturer. Its effect only lasts a few hours since the suspension will return to its natural state after a short time. So it does not cause any effect on the paraglider.

It consists in measuring the resistance to breaking of the suspension.
We use 2 methods:

  • DESTRUCTIVE: It is the traditional method. Let’s break a line and remember the breaking charge. This way we can know the condition of the line and how much life it has left. We record this line so we don’t use it in a future review.
  • NON-DESTRUCTIVE: It is a method developed by APPI. It consists of loading a line up to a stipulated load with a margin of safety above the minimum load it must support. In this way no line is broken

It consists of determining the resistance and aging of the fabric by checking 2 parameters: permeability (“porosity”) and the tear strength of the fabric.

Permeability, perhaps the most famous test, is the factor that least affects flight behavior and safety. Nor is it a determining factor when determining the aging of a tissue. There are many fabrics on the market and the aging and porosity curves do not always follow the same pattern. It is measured with a porosimeter.

The tear strength is a determining factor when judging the aging of a fabric. It is measured with a betsometter.

It consists of checking visually and by touch all the suspension lines to check that all the lines are in good condition and that there are no breaks, “bumps” or damage to the cover.

It is a check designed for paragliders that are presumably in good condition with few hours of flight, but that the time has come for a review according to the manufacturer.

We do a trim check and fabric and suspension visual check.

It is the APPI airworthiness certificate.

It is a recommended review for used paragliders and for paragliders who want to sell. All the necessary parameters are checked to certify that the paraglider is able to fly safely.

Flight test where the maneuvers of the EN-926-2 standard are carried out that are most affected by the aging of a paraglider. Highly recommended as a supplement to a full check. Not available for all sizes.

Replacement of all paraglider suspension lines. Does not include the cost of the line set.
